The German cockroach (Blatellica germanica) and the Asian cockroach (Blatellica orientalis) are the two most common species of cockroach found in the UK and are found both in homes and commercial premises. German Cockroaches are smaller and tan coloured, whereas Oriental cockroaches are larger and rounder and dark brown or black coloured. Of the two species, German cockroaches tend to infest properties in larger numbers, whereas Oriental cockroaches tend to be sighted individually and can be more sporadic in the frequency of sightings. Interestingly, there is a higher prevalence of some cockroach species in some areas – for example Haringey has a significantly higher prevalence of Oriental cockroaches than other areas. Female Oriental cockroaches deploy their egg case (ootheca) in a warm place (usually a wall or floor cavity), the eggs can then take anywhere between 12 and 24 weeks to hatch into cockroaches meaning that issues with Oriental cockroaches can be cyclical. All species of cockroach need very little in terms of food to survive providing they have access to water. .
Problems Caused by Cockroaches
Cockroaches are considered a public health pest due to the fact they transfer diseases within a property as a result of their movement from places such as toilets and waste bins to other areas such as kitchen work surfaces, this means they can transfer bacteria such as salmonella and E. Coli both of which can pose a serious health risk. Cockroaches have also been associated with allergens and can contribute to illnesses such as Asthma. How Do We Treat Them?
For any cockroach infestation we will systematically inspect the property inspection to identify the severity and distribution of the infestation. During this inspection we will deploy an insecticide gel bait which is the most effective treatment method for controlling cockroaches due to the fact that it works on a cascade effect – cockroaches pass the gel bait between them through foraging and mutual feeding which means that each dot of gel bait we deploy can kill over 100 cockroaches. The gel bait we use is discreet and can be applied while the premises are occupied without risk to occupants. .
